Don’t Throw the Boomer into the Twitter Blog

20 02 2009

Does this make sense?  Well maybe as much as all the stuff I heard at seminar I just attended on using Social Networking for business.  I found out one thing: there isn’t a generation gap.  There are three of them and for the first time I’m on the side that is saying, “this stuff is for kids”.  Oops, I forgot we’re Boomers now.  There are tens of millions of people we need to communicate with and we don’t know the right way to do it.  Do we use text messaging or is it a Tweeter?  Let me sum it up, you need to know about these new communication methods but not all at once.  Slow down and eat this elephant one bite at a time (2000 Term).  Pace yourself, tackle one at a time but don’t ignore this evolution or you will be out of the loop (70’s).

Not everything you hear about is an absolute and there are new things being introduced everyday.  Some things are cool ( 50’s) but really are not applicable to your situation.

When you hear about Facebook, MySpace,Twitter, Linkedin, and Blogging remember you don’t have to use them all.  They all do different things.

You also have to understand that these are not Silver Bullets and each one has to be managed.  They require a commitment and to work they have to be maintained.  They are not a website, but like a website they have to evolve.  If you let them become stagnate you have wasted your time.  Before you jump into one of these new fangled deelie-bobs ( 30’s ), do yourself a favor and find a boomer sensitive class to attend.

Here’s one in the Nashville area that is geared to your rotary dial brain. Robert Morris Seminars, Inc. http://www.robertmorris.com/courses/

These classes should be inexpensive and painless.  It’s OK to say “I don’t understand” and ask questions.  Find yourself another inquisitive dude or dudette ( 90’s) and help each other get started.

If it makes you feel better there are a lot of Xer’s & Yer’s that don’t know how to use these things either.

If you would like a copy of this I’ll be glad to mimeograph a copy and send it over using my facsimile machine.  Man this new stuff is great!
